A foggy window can be harmless one morning and a warning sign the next. The clue is where the moisture sits and how long it stays there.
Condensation forms when warm, moist air touches a cooler surface. Glass cools down faster than many other parts of the home, so it often becomes the first place water vapour turns back into tiny droplets. In a humid climate like the Philippines, this can happen often, especially during rainy months, after cooking, after a shower, or when an air conditioner runs for hours.
The good news is that not every foggy window means something is broken. Some condensation is normal. But if it keeps coming back, drips onto frames, leaves stains, or appears between glass panes, it may point to poor ventilation, excess indoor humidity, seal failure, or water intrusion.

Why windows fog up in the first place
Air always holds some water vapour. Warm air holds more of it than cool air. When that warm, moist air touches cold glass, the air beside the glass cools down. Once it reaches its dew point, the water vapour turns into liquid droplets.
That is window condensation.
It is the same reason a cold glass of water sweats on a hot day. The glass is not leaking. Moisture from the air is condensing on the outside surface.
At home, several everyday activities add moisture to indoor air:
Cooking rice, soup, or boiled dishes
Taking hot showers
Drying laundry indoors
Running a humidifier
Keeping many people in a closed room
Using an air conditioner while windows and doors stay shut
Having leaks or damp materials inside walls, ceilings, or flooring
Condensation also becomes more visible when there is a big temperature difference between the glass and the air around it. In many homes, that can happen when an airconditioned room meets warm outdoor air, or when a bedroom cools overnight while indoor moisture remains high.
A little fog that clears quickly is usually fine. Persistent water on glass is different. It means moisture is building up faster than the room can release it.
Condensation on the inside, outside, or between panes means different things
The location of the fog tells a big part of the story. Before you worry about repairs, check which side of the glass is wet.

Fog on the inside
Interior condensation is common in rooms where moisture builds up. Bathrooms, kitchens, laundry areas, and bedrooms are the usual spots.
In bedrooms, foggy glass often appears in the morning. People release moisture while breathing overnight, and closed rooms trap that moisture. If the room is cooled by air conditioning, the glass can become cold enough for droplets to form.
This kind of fog is often manageable. Open a window for a few minutes, use an exhaust fan, or reduce indoor moisture. If the fog returns every day and leaves puddles on the sill, it is no longer just a minor annoyance.
Fog on the outside
Exterior condensation is usually the least worrying type. It can happen when the outside air is warm and humid, while the glass is cooler. This is common after a cool night, after rain, or when an airconditioned room cools the window from inside.
If the droplets are on the outdoor face of the glass and disappear on their own, the window is likely doing its job.
Fog between panes
Moisture between panes is a different issue. Double-glazed or insulated glass units are sealed around the edges. If that seal fails, moisture can enter the space between the panes. The result is a milky, cloudy, or fogged look that cannot be wiped from either side.
This is one of the clearest signs that condensation is a window problem, not just a humidity problem.

When foggy windows are normal
Normal condensation is usually short-lived, light, and tied to a clear cause. It appears, then clears once temperature and airflow change.
Here are common situations where window fog is not usually a serious problem.
After a shower
Bathroom mirrors and windows fog because hot water releases a lot of vapour in a small space. If an exhaust fan or open window clears the fog within a reasonable time, that is expected.
While cooking
Boiling water and steaming food can fog nearby glass. This is especially common in kitchens without a range hood or with windows kept closed during rain.
Early in the morning
Overnight cooling can make glass colder. By morning, moisture may be visible on windows, especially in bedrooms. If it clears after airing out the room, it is usually normal.
During humid or rainy weather
High outdoor humidity makes indoor moisture harder to manage. Even well-kept homes may see more fog during rainy periods.
When using air conditioning
A cooled room can make the glass surface cold. If warm, moist air reaches that cold surface, condensation forms. This may happen on the outside of the window or near gaps where warm air leaks in.
Normal condensation is usually easy to wipe away and does not leave damage. The key signs are that it clears, stays light, and does not soak surrounding materials.
When condensation becomes a problem
Condensation becomes a problem when it turns from a temporary fog into a repeated moisture source. Water may look harmless on glass, but it can damage frames, sealants, paint, plaster, curtains, and nearby furniture over time.
Watch for these signs.
It happens almost every day
Daily condensation suggests indoor humidity is high or ventilation is too weak. This is common in tightly closed rooms, homes with indoor laundry drying, or spaces where air does not move well.
If the same window fogs every morning and stays wet for hours, the room may need better airflow.
Water runs down the glass
Light mist is one thing. Droplets running down the pane are another. Once water reaches the sill, it can collect in corners, seep into cracks, or cause staining.
For timber frames, repeated wetting can lead to swelling or rot. For metal frames, moisture can encourage corrosion on vulnerable parts or damage nearby finishes.
Mould or musty smells appear
Mould grows where moisture lingers. Window corners, rubber seals, curtains, and walls beside the window are common places for it to show up.
A small patch may start as a cleaning issue, but repeated growth means the moisture source still exists. Wiping the mould without fixing humidity or leaks only resets the problem for a short time.
Paint, plaster, or woodwork changes
Look for bubbling paint, soft plaster, dark stains, peeling sealant, warped timber, or damp wall edges. These signs may mean water is not just condensing on glass. It may be entering through gaps, cracks, failed flashing, or poorly sealed frames.
The fog sits between panes
If the cloudy area is trapped inside a double-glazed unit, normal cleaning will not remove it. This often points to a failed edge seal. The window may still block wind and rain, but its insulating performance is reduced.
In this case, the fix is usually not a dehumidifier. The glass unit or window assembly may need repair or replacement.

How to reduce window condensation at home
You do not always need to replace the window. In many cases, small changes can reduce fogging and protect the frame.
Start with the moisture source, then improve airflow.
Ventilate wet areas first
Bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry spaces create the most vapour. Give that moisture a path out.
Try these habits:
Run the exhaust fan during and after showers
Open a bathroom window when privacy and weather allow
Use a range hood or open a kitchen window while cooking
Cover pots when boiling water
Avoid drying laundry indoors when possible
Keep interior doors open after steamy activities to prevent trapped damp air
If a room has no exhaust fan, even short window openings can help. Cross-ventilation works better than opening one window alone, so open another window or door on the opposite side when possible.
Keep air moving
Stagnant air lets moisture settle on cold surfaces. Ceiling fans, stand fans, and louvred vents can help move humid air away from glass.
For airconditioned rooms, avoid setting the temperature extremely low. A very cold room can make window surfaces cold enough to attract condensation, especially near leaks or gaps.
If the room feels clammy even with the aircon running, the issue may be humidity rather than temperature. Some air conditioners have a dry mode, which can help remove moisture without overcooling the room.
Check seals and gaps
Run a simple visual check around the window.
Look for:
Cracked or missing sealant
Gaps between the frame and wall
Loose rubber gaskets
Rust marks or water stains
Soft or swollen timber
Dust tracks that show air leakage
Dampness after rain
Air leaks can worsen condensation by letting warm humid air meet cold surfaces. Water leaks can look like condensation at first, especially when they appear around the frame.
If damp marks show up after rain rather than after humidity-producing activities, suspect water entry.
Use a dehumidifier in problem rooms
A dehumidifier can help in rooms with repeated condensation, especially bedrooms, closets, and enclosed areas. It works best when doors and windows are closed during use, so it can pull moisture from that specific space.
This is a treatment for excess humidity. It will not fix a failed double-glazed seal, a roof leak, or a window installed with gaps.
Improve insulation where possible
Single-pane glass is more likely to fog because it gets cold quickly. Better-sealed windows, thicker curtains, and improved frame insulation can reduce cold surfaces.
Curtains help with comfort, but they can also trap moist air against the glass if kept closed all day. Open them in the morning to let air circulate and allow wet glass to dry.

When to call a professional
Some condensation problems are simple lifestyle and ventilation issues. Others need a closer look.
Get a window, glazing, or home repair professional to inspect the area if you notice any of these signs:
Fog trapped between double-glazed panes
Water stains that spread around the frame
Dampness after rain, even when indoor humidity is low
Mould that returns quickly after cleaning
Rotting timber, rusting frames, or crumbling plaster
Cracked glass, failed sealant, or loose frames
Condensation paired with a musty smell in walls or ceilings
Professional inspection matters because the visible fog may not be the full problem. A window can collect condensation because of indoor humidity, but it can also reveal hidden leaks, missing sealant, poor drainage, or thermal gaps.
If the issue is a failed insulated glass unit, replacing only the glass may be possible in some window systems. If the frame is damaged or poorly installed, a fuller repair may make more sense.
The simplest way to judge foggy windows
Ask three questions.
Where is the moisture?
Inside or outside surface condensation is often related to humidity and temperature. Moisture between panes usually points to seal failure.
How long does it last?
Fog that clears quickly is usually normal. Moisture that stays for hours or returns daily deserves attention.
Is it causing damage?
Stains, mould, soft timber, peeling paint, and damp walls mean the moisture is doing more than sitting on glass.
Foggy windows are common in humid homes, and occasional condensation is part of normal living. The problem starts when the glass stays wet, the frame absorbs water, or the fog is trapped where you cannot wipe it away.
The best first step is simple: check the side of the glass, improve ventilation, and dry wet sills. If the fog keeps coming back or signs of damage appear, treat it as a home maintenance issue, not just a window cleaning chore.
